    Summary

German candle arches or Schwibbogen (which means floating arch) have a history going back over 250 years in the Ore Mountains of the Saxony region, where mining is a dominant livelihood. During the winter months miners spent their daylight hours below ground as they left before dawn for work and returned after dusk. There are varied origin stories of the candle arches. Some attribute the tradition as a homage to the miners placing their burning lamps over the pit entry hole in a semi-circle before starting their last shift before Christmas. There is also the tale that with the miners working long shifts and journeying home on dark, cold and bumpy roads, that their spouses would place a candle display in their window to light the way home. The tradition of lighting candles in the home during the winter months remains strong in the holiday season as the beautiful light display continues to guide the way back home.
