    Williams Sonoma Red Chili Starter

    Receiving Instructions

    • Starter ships fresh at ambient temperature.
    • Upon receipt, store unopened at room temperature for up to 18 months. Once opened, store in refrigerator and enjoy within 7 days.

    Preparation Instructions

    • In large saucepan over medium-high heat, brown 1 lb. (500g) ground beef (preferably chili grind) or 1 lb. (500g) cubed beef for 7–10 minutes. Drain fat.
    • Add 1 jar starter and 1 cup (250ml) water, and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 hour for ground beef; for cubed beef, simmer until tender, 2–3 hours.
    • If desired, add 1 can (15 oz./470g) black beans, drained and rinsed, during last 30 minutes of cooking. For a spicier version, add minced jalapeño along with starter.
    • Serve with grated cheese, diced yellow or green onion, sour cream and tortilla chips.

    Preparation Instructions

    Ingredients

    • 1 1/4 cup milk
    • 6 Tbs. unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled (plus more as needed)
    • 1/4 cup canola oil
    • 1 egg
    • Salted butter, softened for serving
    • Honey, for serving

    Directions

    • Place 8" diam. skillet on middle rack of oven and preheat to 375°F.
    • In medium bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, oil and egg until smooth. Add cornbread mix and stir until just combined.
    • Remove hot skillet from oven and add 1 Tbs. butter, swirling it around and up sides of pan.
    • Immediately pour batter into skillet and return to oven.
    • Bake until cornbread is golden brown on top and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 20–22 minutes. Transfer to wire rack to cool slightly.
    • Enjoy cornbread warm or at room temperature, served with butter and honey, if desired.
    • Alternative Baking Method: Make batter as directed above. Bake in greased 8" sq. baking dish for 25–30 minutes.
